Priyanka Gandhi to Lead Key Candidate Screening in Assam from Feb 18

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit Assam on a two-day tour from February 18 to 19, 2026, to review preparations for the upcoming state Assembly elections, with a primary focus on finalising candidates and strengthening the party’s organisational network. The visit is intended to accelerate candidate selection and ensure closer coordination between the Assam unit and the central leadership ahead of polls expected in March–April 2026 for the 126-member Assembly, party sources said.

Heading the Congress screening committee for the Assam polls, Vadra is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior leaders and grassroots functionaries across the state. Her consultations will include the party’s political affairs committee, sitting MLAs, district presidents, heads of frontal organisations, working presidents, Members of Parliament, legislature party leaders, cell heads and booth-level coordinators.

The screening committee assisting her includes Lok Sabha MPs Imran Masood and Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, together with Sirivella Prasad. Party officials say the purpose of these meetings is to speed up candidate finalisation, resolve local organisational issues and align strategy between state and central teams ahead of candidate announcements.

The Congress is also exploring alliances with other opposition parties as it seeks to consolidate anti-incumbency votes against the ruling coalition in Assam. Currently, the Bharatiya Janata Party holds 64 Assembly seats; its allies-Asom Gana Parishad (9 MLAs), United People’s Party Liberal (7) and Bodoland People’s Front (3)—add to its majority.

On the opposition benches, the Indian National Congress has 26 legislators, the All India United Democratic Front 15, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) one, and there is one Independent MLA. Vadra is expected to return to Delhi on the evening of February 19, 2026.
