Desperate Residents Feel Abandoned as Karuvelipadi Taluk Hospital Fights for Survival

Residents of Karuvelipadi are expressing urgent concerns over the deteriorating conditions at the Government Maharajas Taluk Hospital. They highlight a lack of basic facilities, infrastructure, and specialist doctors, which has significantly discouraged local residents from seeking inpatient treatment. The hospital serves communities in Kannamali, Kumbalangi, Thoppumpadi, and surrounding areas, but many residents report that the substandard conditions are forcing them to travel to the Ernakulam General Hospital for necessary care.

Ismail Muhammed Ali, a local resident, notes that virtually all medical cases are referred to larger facilities due to the inadequacies at their local hospital. The situation is worsened by the presence of snakes and stray dogs on the hospital grounds, a problem that drives away potential patients. “These conditions make it increasingly difficult for us to rely on the local hospital,” Ali said.

Adding to the frustration, the hospital’s ambulance services remain inactive, limiting access to emergency care and forcing residents to rely on private providers. Firoz Thangal, another resident, emphasized, “The two ambulances owned by the hospital are idle and deteriorating. We’re left with no choice but to seek private hospitals, leading to exorbitant charges for even minor medical issues.”

Kavitha Harikumar, the councillor for Division 8 in Karuvelipadi, echoed these sentiments, deeming the hospital’s condition as deplorable and urgent action necessary. “Many people in our area depend on this hospital for care. We need immediate interventions, including constructing a compound wall and addressing the stray dog issue,” she stated. Harikumar also mentioned plans to reconstitute the Hospital Management Committee to facilitate swift corrective measures.

The hospital’s premises reflect years of neglect, with overgrown surroundings and unclean facilities. The unsanitary environment allows stray dogs to roam both inside and outside the hospital, leading residents to favor private healthcare options or travel greater distances for treatment. Ali added, “Our hospital operates in a centuries-old building, and these conditions are disheartening.”

Efforts to upgrade the Taluk Hospital have been stalled despite a proposal approved by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) six years ago for a super-speciality block. Although the foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on February 18, 2021, little progress has been observed since. K.J. Maxy, an MLA involved in the oversight, attributed the delays to issues with the implementing agency and the contractor, assuring residents that the KIIFB funds remain available and steps are being taken for the retendering process.

As the community grapples with ongoing healthcare challenges, the call for immediate upgrades and improvements at the Government Maharajas Taluk Hospital continues to grow louder. Addressing these concerns is not only essential for the residents of Karuvelipadi but also a matter of maintaining the integrity of healthcare services in the region.
