Tura, Feb 13 — The GSU’s Nengkhra regional unit has urged the immediate start of construction on a bridge across the river at Agalgre, forwarding a memorandum to the chief minister after receiving information from the AHAM’s Williamnagar unit that the Public Works Department has estimated the project at Rs 15.56 crore, though the estimate still awaits formal approval.
The memorandum, the GSU said, highlights serious safety concerns: the river becomes hazardous to cross during the monsoon when strong currents make passage extremely dangerous for local residents.
“The river becomes extremely dangerous to cross during the rainy season due to the strong current. Given the situation being faced by them, we can only demand the immediate commissioning of the bridge to ease their woes,” the GSU stated in its appeal.
The regional unit has asked the chief minister to instruct the relevant authorities to begin work promptly and to allocate the necessary funds so the PWD estimate can be approved and the bridge construction initiated without further delay.
