Singla Hails Groundbreaking First Extradosed Bridge in Northeast
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Rs 3,000 crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma bridge over the Brahmaputra on Saturday, Feb 14, 2026. The 1.24-km, six-lane link between Guwahati and North Guwahati, built across one of India’s most challenging riverine terrains, is expected to boost regional connectivity and urban mobility in Assam.
Executed by SPS Construction India, the bridge was designed to shorten travel times, ease chronic congestion and enable smoother movement of commuters, freight and long-distance travellers across the river. The project involved extensive planning and coordination to cope with varying river conditions during construction.
“It represents a significant engineering achievement and a key contributor to Assam’s long-term transportation network,” SPS Construction India director Rohit Singla told the press. He said the company’s role was to convert that vision into a durable, safe and functional structure and that authorities’ guidance and cooperation helped deliver the project.
The bridge uses an extradosed design — a modern hybrid that combines elements of girder and cable-stayed systems with lower towers and stay cables — which, officials say, provided optimal strength and faster construction over the Brahmaputra’s wide span. The six-lane structure is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India.
Officials said the new link integrates key transport corridors and aligns with Assam’s broader infrastructure roadmap. A senior state government official noted the bridge will improve access to national institutions and cultural landmarks in North Guwahati, support plans to develop North Guwahati as a twin city and aid overall development of the state capital region.
Construction was closely monitored by relevant authorities to ensure compliance with safety, quality and environmental standards. Singla added that SPS Construction India will continue collaborating with stakeholders to emphasise the long-term value the infrastructure will deliver for residents, businesses and the wider Northeast region.
