PM Modi to Attend Assam Airshow, Inaugurate Rs 5,450 Crore Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on February 14 to attend an airshow in Dibrugarh and inaugurate and flag off development projects worth more than Rs 5,450 crore aimed at improving connectivity, digital infrastructure, higher education and urban mobility across the North‑Eastern Region. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) he is scheduled to land at about 10:30 AM at the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on Moran Bypass, where he will witness an aerial display by fighter aircraft, transport planes and helicopters.
The Emergency Landing Facility, described as the first of its kind in Northeast India, has been developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force as dual‑use infrastructure. It is designed to support both military and civilian aircraft in emergencies, handling fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes maximum take‑off weight, and is expected to bolster disaster response and strategic operations in the region.
At around 1 PM the Prime Minister will inspect the newly built Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra. Built at an approximate cost of Rs 3,030 crore, the six‑lane extradosed prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati and is the first of its kind in the Northeast. The bridge is expected to cut travel time between the two sides to about seven minutes. An extradosed PSC design combines elements of girder and cable‑stayed bridges to allow longer spans and efficient load distribution.
Given the area’s high seismic vulnerability, the bridge incorporates base isolation using friction pendulum bearings to reduce earthquake forces, and high‑performance stay cables for durability. A Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) has also been installed for real‑time condition monitoring and early damage detection to enhance safety and long‑term performance.
Around 1:30 PM the Prime Minister will inaugurate and flag off multiple projects at Lachit Ghat in Guwahati, including the National Data Centre for the Northeastern region at Amingaon in Kamrup district. The data centre, with a sanctioned load of 8.5 MW and an average rack capacity of 10 kW, will host mission‑critical applications for several government departments and serve as a disaster recovery centre for other national data centres, strengthening the region’s digital backbone under the Digital India vision.
Mr. Modi will also inaugurate the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati, expected to boost higher and management education in the Northeast. He will flag off 225 electric buses under the PM‑eBus Sewa Scheme-100 in Guwahati, 50 in Nagpur, 50 in Bhavnagar and 25 in Chandigarh-measures that the government says will benefit over 50 lakh citizens with cleaner, more affordable and reliable public transport, improving urban mobility and quality of life.
