Mi-Kari Ampati: Meghalaya’s Indigenous Sport & Music Revival
Mi-Kari Festival 2026 was inaugurated at Students’ Field in Ampati, South West Garo Hills, as a two-day celebration aimed at promoting indigenous culture, youth participation and local enterprise. Organised by the District Administration of South West Garo Hills in collaboration with the state Departments of Tourism and Arts & Culture, the event is being positioned for inclusion in Meghalaya’s annual cultural calendar to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy.
The opening day featured strong participation in traditional Garo sports, with competitions in Rong·ma Chilsusaa, Wa·pong Sika, An·ding Oka, Jakpong Pesusaa, Makkre Wagong Mala and Budu Salsuaa. Organisers said these agrarian-rooted games help safeguard intangible cultural heritage while making it accessible to wider audiences and younger generations.
A flower show and the ‘Ampati’s Got Talent’ segment showcased local creativity, with performances by Saldorik, Restless Desire, Johnny Lee and band, and Farlay Cheran and band. Emerging musicians supported under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme also took the stage, highlighting efforts to nurture homegrown talent.
Legislators Subir Marak (Rangsakona), Sanjay A. Sangma (Mahendraganj) and Ian Botham K. Sangma (Salmanpara) attended the inauguration. Speakers emphasised the need for platforms that uplift local artists and entrepreneurs and confirmed that Mi-Kari will be organised annually. The festival was described as both a cultural celebration and an economic opportunity for self-help groups and small businesses across the district.
Deputy Commissioner Anendya Raajsshre said the festival “aims to strengthen community bonds while encouraging young people to engage with local opportunities.” Exhibition stalls by farmers, artisans, self-help groups and young entrepreneurs formed a central part of the event, reflecting the government’s focus on community-driven growth and rural tourism development.
The second day’s programme includes ‘Master Chef Ampati’, showcasing indigenous cuisine, a Healthy Baby Show, a performance by Tura Dance Academy and live music by Tony Balsam, Amachi and Lynx, Jowai. Organisers say the expanded line-up is intended to deepen cultural participation and draw more visitors to the district.
