Shocking Canadian School Shooting: 10 Dead, 25 Injured
Ten people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and at least 25 others were injured in a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia’s Peace region on Wednesday, February 11, according to reports. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the suspect was found dead inside the school from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted injury.
The shooting occurred about 1:20 p.m. local time. Tumbler Ridge police issued an alert at 2 p.m. urging residents of the town of roughly 2,400 to shelter in place, lock their doors and remain indoors; that order was lifted about five hours later. Six victims were found dead at the school and another died en route to hospital. Two people were airlifted with life‑threatening injuries.
About 25 others were assessed and treated at a local medical centre, the RCMP said. Police later discovered two additional victims at a second location believed to be connected to the incident, bringing the confirmed death toll to 10. Authorities are working to determine whether a second suspect was involved and to confirm the total number of victims.
In an early description circulated by Tumbler Ridge Police, the suspect was described as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress. Additional officers from neighbouring areas were deployed to assist with the investigation. The school is expected to remain closed for the rest of the week.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the tragedy and added, “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” writing on the social media platform X.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as they piece together a timeline of the attack and work to confirm all victims and possible motives.
