Author and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty told the Upper House on Monday that India’s global image has “transformed” over the past 15 years, citing personal encounters abroad to illustrate the shift and welcoming several provisions in the Union Budget 2026. Speaking during the budget discussion, she credited steady development and strong leadership for changing how other countries view India.
Murty recounted her first visit to the United States in 1979, when she felt “sad and humiliated” after immigration officials questioned her about conditions in India and treated her dismissively. She said that experience was a turning point in her life and, quoting her husband NR Narayana Murthy, emphasised that “lasting respect comes from performance and contribution.” The couple resolved to give back to the country through sincere work, she said.
Contrasting that early encounter with a visit about a decade ago, Murty said US officials greeted her warmly and praised India’s progress, describing Indians as “enterprising” and “hardworking.” She noted officials compared Bengaluru to Silicon Valley and pointed to the rise of Indian startups, the global spread of Indian food and businesses, and Americans travelling to India for affordable medical and dental care.
Murty linked the improved perception to consistent economic growth, stable governance and long-term policymaking, arguing that such progress takes time but strengthens India’s standing on the world stage. She attributed much of the change to policies pursued over the last decade and a half under what she called a “great leader,” while not naming the prime minister.
She also described a recent interaction with UK immigration officials who were sceptical when she listed 10 Downing Street as her London address, saying few believed a “simple” elderly woman could be the mother-in-law of then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak — an anecdote she used to underline lingering stereotypes.
On the Union Budget, Murty welcomed proposals on infrastructure, the plan for women’s hostels in every district and dedicated markets for women entrepreneurs. She urged expansion of cultural diplomacy, specifically backing Project Mausam to deepen ties across the Indian Ocean region.
Murty’s remarks framed the nation’s changing global reputation as the result of sustained performance and policymaking, and she urged continued focus on inclusive development and cultural outreach to consolidate India’s improved image.
