Protest Erupts in Sivasagar: Tensions Rise Over Alleged ‘Miya’ Influx
Tension rose at Dolmukh Chariali in Sivasagar on February 8, as over a hundred members of the Jatiya Sangrami Sena staged a protest concerning the movement of migrant laborers, leading to a brief period of unrest. The demonstration involved activists and officials of the organization, who raised provocative slogans and blocked a section of the road, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Protesters expressed strong emotions, particularly regarding what they referred to as the “growing dominance” of the Miya community. Slogans such as “Miya dominance will not be tolerated” and “Down with Miya” resonated through the area, attracting local residents and prompting law enforcement to maintain order and prevent any potential violence.
Yunus Tamuli, affiliated with the Bagh Sena, informed reporters that approximately 100 laborers identified as “Miya” were expected to arrive in the region that day. He noted that despite an openly accepted challenge, no such individuals were present during the protest.
In the absence of the anticipated arrivals, the protesting group took a symbolic action by targeting an effigy, which they described as a representation of their opposition. Fortunately, the protest concluded without any reported violence, but it did raise concerns about the inflammatory language used and the risk of communal tension.
Police monitored the situation closely and affirmed that law and order remained intact. Authorities urged all organizations and individuals to maintain peace and address grievances through lawful and democratic channels.
