Urban Consumer Confidence Dips: Caution Sets In Amid Economic Uncertainty
Urban consumer confidence has seen a slight decline in the latest survey conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), reflecting growing caution among households regarding future economic conditions. While the sentiment toward the current situation remains generally stable, expectations for the upcoming year have noticeably softened.
The survey indicates that the Current Situation Index (CSI) has fallen to 98.1, down from 98.4 in the previous assessment. Although this change is marginal, it reverses three consecutive rounds of improvement in how households perceive the prevailing economic landscape, suggesting a slight downturn in overall economic sentiment.
Moreover, consumer outlook for the next year has also weakened, largely due to reduced expectations regarding general economic conditions, income potential, and price levels. Consequently, the Future Expectations Index (FEI) decreased by 2.2 points, landing at 123.4. Despite this dip, the index remains in optimistic territory, suggesting households still foresee improvements, albeit at a reduced pace.
Perceptions of current earnings among households have remained mostly unchanged, providing a degree of stability to overall sentiment. However, expectations for income growth over the next year have moderated, revealing an increasing uncertainty about future earning potential. Alongside this, concerns regarding prices and inflation have worsened, affecting both current and future outlooks as households grapple with rising cost-of-living pressures.
In stark contrast, rural consumer confidence has shown relative resilience. The rural CSI has consistently remained above neutral levels over the past six survey rounds, reflecting stable views of present economic conditions. Additionally, the one-year outlook in rural areas has seen steady gains since September 2024, retaining its optimistic stance.
However, even rural households reported a decline in perceptions surrounding prices and inflation in the latest survey. A greater number of respondents indicated worsening conditions, although the proportion of those perceiving no change has also grown. This illustrates that while inflation remains a concern, its impact varies among rural respondents.
Significantly, current inflation perceptions in rural areas have risen by 50 basis points to 5.1%. Meanwhile, expectations for inflation one year ahead have increased slightly by 10 basis points to 6.2%.
Overall, the survey highlights a mild easing of consumer sentiment, particularly in urban regions, driven by heightened anxiety over future economic conditions and inflation, even as rural confidence and long-term optimism stand comparatively strong.
Additionally, households’ median perception of inflation edged up by 30 basis points to 6.9% from the previous survey. Inflation expectations also firmed across both short-term and long-term projections, with three-month expectations rising to 7.9% and one-year forecasts climbing to 8.6%.
The survey reveals that a larger share of respondents anticipate rising prices for both the short term and over the coming year, marking a reversal from prior trends. Households expect higher prices and inflationary pressures across various product categories, indicating that concerns about inflation are increasingly widespread.
