Kuladhar Saikia Urges Assamese Use in Guwahati Airport Announcements
Former Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia, together with two other retired senior bureaucrats, has urged authorities at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi (LGBI) International Airport to include Assamese in all public announcements, saying the language’s omission contradicts official guidance and undermines passenger convenience. In a representation dated June 26 to the Chief Airport Officer at LGBI International Airport, Borjhar, the trio asked that announcements at Terminal 2 not be limited to English and Hindi but also be made in Assamese.
The representation, jointly signed by retired IPS officers Kuladhar Saikia and Jyotirmoy Chakraborty and retired ACS officer Mukul Chandra Gogoi, notes that Assamese is the principal regional language and the lingua franca of Assam and much of the Northeast. The signatories said excluding Assamese from airport announcements is inconsistent with directives and advisories issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which mandate or encourage the use of regional languages alongside Hindi and English.
Beyond issues of linguistic recognition, the retired officers stressed passenger convenience and public safety. They argued that clear, immediate communication in the regional language is essential in emergencies within the terminal or on board an aircraft so that passengers fully understand and promptly comply with safety instructions.
The representation warned that failure to use Assamese during critical situations could worsen emergencies and potentially lead to avoidable mishaps or disasters due to miscommunication. It urged the Chief Airport Officer to ensure the consistent inclusion of Assamese in all public announcements at LGBI International Airport in accordance with the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s guidelines.
The request aims to align airport practice with government guidance and to ensure that announcements serve the needs of Assam’s travelling public by providing essential information in the region’s primary language.
