Shillong Launches Revolutionary Automated Car Park to Alleviate Traffic Woes
In a crucial move to alleviate Shillong’s persistent traffic woes, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the state’s first Automated Multilevel Car Park on Friday. Located on Vivekananda Road near the Additional Secretariat, this facility is part of a wider, long-term urban mobility strategy rather than a standalone solution.
During the inauguration, Sangma acknowledged that traffic congestion is one of the city’s most pressing challenges, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue. “A multi-pronged strategy was developed to gradually decongest the city and address the underlying problems causing traffic jams. The multilevel car park we are inaugurating today is just one component of this solution,” he stated. He also revealed plans for additional multilevel car parks, with nearly nine more expected to be built, which will collectively create parking space for around 1,300 vehicles.
Sangma highlighted the need for coordinated policy-level interventions alongside infrastructure improvements. He referenced the state’s parking policy, which allows private landowners to collaborate with the government to create parking facilities while retaining the rights to revenue. He noted that unregulated roadside parking is a significant contributor to congestion, explaining, “Different aspects are being analyzed, and one of the key issues is random parking.” He expressed that the answer lies in providing sufficient and designated parking spaces for drivers.
The Chief Minister detailed several complementary measures being implemented to ease congestion in the city. These include establishing dedicated parking areas for public transport buses and taxis at Kyndailad, relocating hawkers from congested streets, widening the Umshyrpi to Seventh Mile stretch, and proposing an elevated or four-lane road from Rhino Museum Point to Civil Hospital and Barik. He reiterated the long-term benefits of relocating key administrative offices to the New Administrative City, stating, “All these proposals are at an advanced stage and aim to facilitate traffic movement, providing immediate relief while considering future needs.”
This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility in Shillong, aimed at creating a more organized and efficient traffic system for the future.
