Citizens Demand Action Against Chief Minister’s Communal Remarks in Gauhati
Concerns regarding Assam’s recent social situation have been raised by several eminent intellectuals and thinkers. They are particularly troubled by remarks made by the state’s Chief Minister, which were perceived as targeting a specific community. In response, these concerned citizens have expressed their objections and today sent an open letter to the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, urging the court to take necessary action against the Chief Minister’s statements.
The letter has been signed by more than 40 prominent writers, intellectuals, educators, and respected figures from various sectors of society. They believe that such comments could potentially create divisions within the community and therefore necessitate judicial intervention. Representatives from the Assam Civil Society, including Dr. Indrani Dutta (former Principal of the Amiyapatty Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development), Paresh Malakar (Editor of Northeast Now), Robin Dutta (former Principal of the Forensic Science Laboratory), and Deepak Goswami (former Deputy Director of the National Informatics Centre), formally submitted the letter at the High Court around noon on February 5, Thursday.
After submitting the letter, the delegation addressed the media to clarify their stance. They emphasized that it is the responsibility of every citizen to uphold democracy and social harmony, which is the reason they sought the court’s intervention.
