Nagaland Partners with IIFT Kolkata to Revolutionize Export Growth
The Department of Industries and Commerce of the Government of Nagaland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) based in Kolkata on February 5. This significant agreement, formalized at the Directorate of Industries and Commerce in Kohima, aims to boost export promotion and facilitate trade throughout the state.
The signing involved P. Tokugha Sema, the Director of Industries and Commerce, representing the Nagaland government, and Dr. K. Rangarajan, a professor who heads a center at IIFT Kolkata. The collaboration is set to establish an Export Facilitation Cell (EFC) in Nagaland, functioning as a key institutional support system for entrepreneurs looking to enter or expand in the export market.
The EFC will provide tailored guidance and support to both existing and potential exporters. Its services include helping entrepreneurs identify international markets, develop export plans, navigate customs and tariff procedures, obtain necessary certifications, and adhere to non-tariff regulations. Additionally, it will assist the state government in formulating policies and implementing trade promotion initiatives.
IIFT Kolkata is committed to providing expert consultancy through its faculty and export specialists, alongside developing a web-based platform designed for information dissemination. This platform will include a query-builder system to facilitate easy access to information. Research and analytical studies related to international trade and businesses relevant to Nagaland will also be part of IIFT’s responsibilities.
The Department of Industries and Commerce will function as the nodal agency for the EFC. It will provide essential infrastructure such as office space, internet connectivity, and basic equipment. The department will also oversee outreach efforts, publicity, and coordination with District Industries Centres and other stakeholders.
During the signing event, Director P. Tokugha Sema emphasized the partnership with IIFT Kolkata as a landmark achievement in Nagaland’s quest to become a competitive player in the export sector. He noted that this initiative would create new pathways for local entrepreneurs to tap into global markets, thereby fostering export-led growth in the state.
The MoU symbolizes a mutual commitment between the two institutions to enhance exports, entrepreneurship, and job creation in Nagaland, thereby contributing to the state’s broader economic development.
