TMC Seeks Voter Support with 26 Applications for GHADC Elections
As political activity intensifies ahead of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Meghalaya has garnered significant attention, receiving 26 applications from candidates across 16 constituencies. This surge in interest reflects the growing prospects for the opposition party in the upcoming council polls. However, an intriguing trend has emerged: most of the party’s sitting Members of District Council (MDCs) have opted not to participate in the ticket race.
Out of the six current TMC-associated MDCs, only two have submitted applications for party tickets, while four have chosen to abstain as the formal application process concluded earlier this month. This situation has sparked speculation about potential political realignments and strategic considerations as the elections approach in the Garo Hills region.
Rupa M. Marak, the MLA from Dadenggre and head of the Meghalaya TMC election committee for the GHADC elections, confirmed the details, stating that the final date for applying for party tickets was January 17. She added that sitting MDCs still have the opportunity to apply. Sources from the party indicate a desire to balance experienced members with new aspirants, as TMC seeks to strengthen its position in the autonomous council.
The limited engagement from current MDCs has added an intriguing dimension to the pre-election landscape. Meanwhile, speculation regarding the potential postponement of the GHADC elections has been firmly dismissed by state officials.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has categorically ruled out any delays, emphasizing that the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council concludes on April 18, necessitating that the election process be completed prior to that deadline. His remarks highlight the government’s commitment to adhering to the constitutional schedule.
With an election schedule anticipated to be announced soon, political parties are now mobilizing for the upcoming polls across the Garo Hills.
