Nagaland–Japan Connect 2026: Unlocking Global Job Opportunities for Youth

In a bold move towards international economic collaboration, the Government of Nagaland officially launched the Nagaland–Japan Connect 2026 initiative on January 28. This flagship program aims to foster structured overseas employment, skill development, and institutional partnerships with Japan. The event took place at the Integrated Business Hub & Innovation Centre (IBHIC) in Dimapur, organized by the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN).

This initiative represents a significant step in Nagaland’s efforts to enhance its global engagement strategy, focusing on the development of human capital, international mobility, and people-to-people partnerships. The launch was attended by senior officials from the Nagaland government, representatives from Japan’s Kochi Prefecture, industry leaders, academic institutions, and hundreds of aspiring youth, indicating a growing synergy between Nagaland’s workforce potential and Japan’s labor market requirements.

Chairing the program, I. Changsang of the Nagaland Civil Service emphasized that Nagaland–Japan Connect is intended to be a long-term platform rather than a one-time event. He stated that the initiative is designed to prepare Naga youth for global employment opportunities while fostering lasting partnerships with Japan.

Abu Metha, an advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of IDAN, highlighted the changing global perspective of Nagaland. He encouraged the youth to seek international exposure, learn and apply best practices, and contribute to the state’s development, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting such global endeavors.

Hekani Jakhalu, the Minister for Industries and Commerce, underscored the urgent need for broader employment opportunities due to rising job demand. With over a million job seekers in Nagaland, she noted that creating sustainable livelihoods necessitates global competitiveness. Jakhalu described the initiative as a foundational step for deeper international cooperation, emphasizing the discipline and credibility of Naga youth.

Kunitoshi Hojo, representing Kochi Prefecture, addressed Japan’s demographic challenges and the increasing necessity for skilled foreign labor. He mentioned that the number of Naga workers in Kochi has surged from zero to 19 within two years, expressing optimism about the potential for future success stories.

Kaushik Choudhury spoke on the economic and cultural promise of the collaboration, asserting that Nagaland is being presented not just as a labor source, but as a hub of quality products, innovation, and culture. He highlighted initiatives promoting Nagaland coffee and cultural centers as examples of inclusive growth opportunities.

Dr. Pangersenla Walling from Nagaland University stressed the importance of language training in enhancing global employability. She noted that targeted certificate programs, with support from subsidies, are aimed at making students culturally competent and job-ready.

Deputy Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang emphasized that Nagaland–Japan Connect is a strategic economic intervention with long-term benefits. Citing the state’s ongoing engagement with Japan since 2014, he assured that investments in language and skills would lead to job creation, financial remittances, and stronger institutional capacity.

Kumar Ramnikant, Secretary of Industries and Commerce, underlined that the platform is already yielding tangible employment outcomes. He pointed out that exposure to Japanese workplace culture, characterized by discipline and productivity, would enhance local enterprises when youth return with international experiences.

The event culminated in the signing of key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to solidify cooperation in vocational training, internships, and international placements. Konnekt Asia was named Nagaland’s official representative in Japan in collaboration with IDAN, while an MoU was signed between NYK and IDAN to establish a vocational training ecosystem that combines language skills with industry-specific education. Additionally, separate MoUs were executed with Corporation Kumagai Co., Ltd. and Hagumi Farm Co., Ltd. to facilitate one-year internships in advanced Japanese farming techniques.

A dedicated session prepared participants for overseas employment by focusing on Japanese work ethics and recruitment pathways, with Japanese companies presenting detailed information on various job roles and prospects. Over 450 students registered for the event, which provided direct interviews with Japanese employers spanning multiple sectors.

Nagaland–Japan Connect 2026 marks a crucial milestone towards structured global engagement, aiming to transform international exposure into enhanced employability and long-term economic resilience for Nagaland.
