India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, emphasized that the rotation of bowlers in the current T20I series against New Zealand is aimed not only at managing workloads but also at preventing rival teams from developing strategies ahead of the T20 World Cup. As India prepares for this crucial tournament, they have deployed various bowling combinations throughout the series, with key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and spinner Varun Chakravarthy being rested at different phases.
Morkel noted, “We’ve got a handful of bowlers that can bowl in every situation. Part of our strategy leading into the World Cup is to explore different combinations. We don’t want teams to form fixed plans against us.” He expressed confidence in the current approach, highlighting that if teams start anticipating their moves, they will create uncertainty about the bowling lineup and tactics.
The T20 World Cup schedule poses unique challenges, as India will compete in diverse conditions ranging from New Delhi to Mumbai to Colombo. The inclusion of all-rounders Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya enables India to mix and match their bowling lineup effectively. Morkel stressed the importance of forming strong bowling partnerships, aiming to take key wickets by the 15th or 16th over to exert pressure on opposing teams. “We have 11 match winners, which is a strategic advantage,” he said.
Axar, who recently returned from a finger injury, provides versatility. Morkel pointed out, “Axar can bowl at all phases of the game, both with the new ball and during the power play.” He is also optimistic about Hardik Pandya, who has been performing well. “Hardik is showing his class with the ball in this series and looks extremely fit, which is a huge asset for us. His experience in the changing room is invaluable.”
Morkel highlighted Pandya’s recent performance, noting that he has bowled at high speeds and demonstrated effective bounce in his deliveries. This improvement, he remarked, adds significant energy to the team.
In regard to his relationship with premier bowler Bumrah, Morkel mentioned that they have developed a strong rapport. More than focusing on technical skills, Morkel acts as a sounding board for Bumrah, helping him manage the immense pressure associated with his role. “Jasprit is the best bowler in the world, but everyone needs someone to talk to. The expectations on him can be daunting,” Morkel explained. He continually checks in with Bumrah to ensure he feels comfortable and aligned with team strategies.
Morkel concluded with a motivational analogy, comparing Bumrah’s performance to a finely tuned car, stating, “If you can get the engine and oil running smoothly, the car will perform.” This holistic management of both skills and mental well-being is essential as the team gears up for the upcoming challenges.
