Mizoram’s Hindi-Speaking Day: A Step Towards Cultural Unity and Growth
The Mizoram government has announced the introduction of a ‘Hindi-speaking day’ in all schools across the state to improve Hindi language proficiency. On Tuesday, School Education Minister Vanlalthlana revealed that this initiative will take place once a month and will be overseen by the state School Education Department. On the designated day, both students and teachers will be encouraged to communicate exclusively in Hindi, including during school breaks.
The aim of the initiative is to enhance spoken Hindi skills among students, as Hindi is infrequently spoken in Mizoram due to the limited number of Hindi speakers in the region. The official languages of the state are Mizo and English. Vanlalthlana expressed that many Mizo individuals face language barriers when traveling or working elsewhere in India due to their limited proficiency in Hindi. He emphasized that knowledge of Hindi has become increasingly vital for students looking for employment outside Mizoram.
To facilitate this initiative, Hindi teachers will undergo specialized training to help students achieve fluency. Additionally, extra support will be provided to students who struggle with the language. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will also develop textbooks focused on spoken Hindi.
Vanlalthlana confirmed, “Considering the importance of spoken Hindi, the government will officially notify Hindi-speaking day for all schools, during which Hindi will also be used during school recesses once a month.”
In a related initiative, the government plans to implement a ‘home language day’ in all English-medium schools to promote and preserve local languages. This will allow students to communicate in their mother tongues during school breaks once a week. The minister stated that this move addresses the growing prevalence of English among students, which is occurring even in their homes and outside school settings, often at the expense of local languages.
In addition to these language initiatives, Vanlalthlana indicated that the state government will ensure that all teachers employed by the state-except those with fewer than five years until retirement-pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) within two years, in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling.
