Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi visited the residence of the late Kabindra Purkayastha, a senior BJP leader and former Union Minister, on January 28 in Silchar, after wrapping up his election campaign in Assam’s Cachar district. Gogoi engaged in various poll-related activities in Katigorah earlier that day before heading to Silchar, where he met with several Congress party workers.
During his visit, Gogoi expressed his condolences to the family of Kabindra Purkayastha, who passed away on January 7 at the age of 94. He spent time with Purkayastha’s son, Kanad, offering prayers and support to the grieving family.
Kabindra Purkayastha was a notable figure in Indian politics, having served as a Union Minister of State. A founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was born on December 15, 1931, in Kamarkhal, which is now part of Bangladesh. He had a longstanding association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since 1951 and significantly contributed to the BJP’s organization and strength in the Northeast.
Gogoi’s visit comes amid active election campaigning in the Barak Valley region, capturing the interest of various political factions.
