Transforming Connectivity: GCC Unveils Stunning Pedestrian Plaza on Khader Nawaz Khan Road!
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to unveil the newly developed pedestrian plaza on Khader Nawaz Khan Road in the first week of February. This enhancement aims to transform the area into a vibrant space for both pedestrians and local businesses. As part of the initiative, the facility will feature on-street parking that can accommodate 20 cars and 40 motorcycles, aimed at easing congestion in the popular shopping district.
In anticipation of increased foot and vehicle traffic following the plaza’s inauguration, GCC officials are in discussions with the traffic police to explore additional parking options nearby. “Chennai KNK Khader Nawaz Khan Road looks beautiful with proper pedestrian tracks, lighting, and the road surface. This is how urban streets should be. A very good try by the Chennai Corporation,” remarked a local resident on X, reflecting the community’s support for the project.
However, some residents have expressed concerns regarding potential traffic issues stemming from the road’s redesign, which has cut it down to half its previous width. They’ve called on the GCC to implement stricter traffic regulations, including designated no-parking zones and one-way traffic protocols. “After reducing Khader Nawaz Khan Road to half its width, we are awaiting the establishment of no parking zones and one-way traffic on the road. Right now, it’s a complete mess. Someone needs to step in,” one resident stated.
In response to these concerns, GCC and traffic police officials are evaluating feasible locations for additional parking spaces along surrounding streets, including Wallace Garden First and Second Streets, Rutland Gate Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Streets. Plans are underway to create parking availability for over 50 cars specifically on Rutland Gate Second Street.
Moreover, the civic agency, along with the traffic police, aims to regulate traffic flow by instituting one-way rules from Model School Road to Nungambakkam High Road. Entry onto Khader Nawaz Khan Road from Nungambakkam High Road will be restricted to further streamline vehicle movement and enhance pedestrian safety.
As the inauguration date approaches, the GCC is working diligently to ensure that the pedestrian plaza not only beautifies the area but also addresses the parking needs and traffic flow concerns that have been raised by residents. The project represents a significant step towards improving urban infrastructure in Chennai, enhancing the overall experience for both locals and visitors.
Published on January 27, 2026, the successful integration of this pedestrian plaza will mark an important milestone in Chennai’s ongoing efforts to foster sustainable urban development.
