On January 25, 2025, a district-level meeting of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) was successfully held at the Golaghat Kindergarten School. The event commenced with a performance by the renowned folk artist Dhoneshwar Saikia, embodying the spirit of the meeting.

Prominent educator and social worker Hem Phukan presided over the gathering. The meeting’s objectives were outlined by Soneshwar Norah, the joint secretary of the IPTA Assam state committee and one of the coordinators of the event.

Norah emphasized the moral responsibility of the Assamese community to celebrate the centenary of distinguished Assamese folk artists like Keshav Mahanta, folk singer Dilip Sharma, poet Navakanta Barua, Anil Roychoudhury, and popular voice Bhupen Hazarika through various mediums.

In recognition of this commitment, the conscious society of Golaghat declared 2026 as the “National Gratitude Year,” intending to collectively commemorate through IPTA. The assembly expressed support for the idea that the values embodied by the IPTA enrich the Assamese identity. It was the primary goal of the meeting to advocate for the establishment of a solid district committee of IPTA, reflecting the collective presence of esteemed members from various corners of the district.

Hem Phukan noted the significance of uniting all like-minded individuals for this cause, which resonated with other attendees, including Bhavesh Dutta, Anu Khinikar, Nijora Borkataki, Bitupan Gogoi, Pradeep Borah, and Neelpadma Acharya, who all voiced their support for forming the district committee.

Following recommendations from the meeting, a panel comprising four members was tasked with preparing a committee structure. This included nearly 35 names that showcased the commitment of Golaghat’s conscious populace to the IPTA.

The assembly unanimously appointed Dhoneshwar Saikia and Nunusing Kormokar as the chief advisors, with Dr. Amulya Bora becoming president, and Rumy Saikia and Sopon Jyoti Thakur serving as vice presidents. This was further supported by five vice presidents, five members in the secretarial board, five assistant secretaries, five organizational secretaries, and 15 additional members.

All present members acknowledged their adherence to the constitution and guidelines of the IPTA. Each representative filled out a membership form to confirm their association with the IPTA, underlining their commitment to sustaining the relevance of the association linked to icons like Jyoti Prasad, Bishnu Prasad, and Bhupen Hazarika.

The meeting included contributions from prominent scholars and socially established individuals representing various regions, including Soru Pathar, Dergaon, Deyang, Komarabandha, Golaghat, Kaziranga, Bokakhat, Komargaon, and Morangi. Exceptional attendees included Dhoneshwar Saikia, Nunusing Kormokar, Rumy Saikia, Bhavesh Dutta, Dr. Kumud Kumar Dutta, Nijora Borkataki, Kalpana Chetiya, and others, all contributing to the intellectual and cultural discourse.

Local folk artist Amir Kormokar added musical flair by performing folk songs resembling the lives of indigenous communities during the event.

In addition to the hosts, attendees included educators like Anu Khinikar, Loni Phukan, Monti Khound, Navjyoti Bora, Nalin Hazarika, and many more influential figures.

The meeting concluded under the leadership of newly elected president Dr. Amulya Bora after the committee’s introduction, marking a new chapter for IPTA in the region.
