A controversy has erupted in Kangpokpi following the distribution of allegedly expired biscuits to children during the 77th Republic Day celebrations organized by the district administration. This incident has ignited public outrage and calls for accountability.

During the official Republic Day program at the district headquarters, food items, including biscuits, were handed out to attendees, many of whom were minors. The event has drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups, parents, and community leaders who are concerned about public safety and administrative negligence.

The Thadou Youth Association – Sadar Hills (TYA-SH) condemned the actions of the district administration, labeling the incident as a gross failure of oversight. They allege that distributing expired biscuits is a violation of basic food safety standards and undermines public trust. In their statement, TYA-SH emphasized that distributing expired consumables breaches the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, which deems the procurement and distribution of such items a punishable offense. They noted the seriousness of the situation, particularly because it involved children during a national celebration.

The incident has sparked widespread anger, leading residents of Kangpokpi and the Sadar Hills region to question the accountability and responsiveness of local authorities. Parents and community members are adamant that public health should never be compromised. One concerned parent stated, “This is an insult to Republic Day and a serious threat to our children’s safety,” highlighting the inadequate oversight during the event.

In response to the uproar, TYA-SH has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation, a public apology from the Deputy Commissioner, and stringent disciplinary and legal actions against officials responsible for the procurement and distribution of the food items.
