Embracing a Bright Future: Sikkim’s Vision for Prosperity and Growth
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay expressed the Sikkim government’s firm commitment to the vision of ‘Sunaulo, Samriddha ani Samarth Sikkim’ during his Republic Day message. He outlined eight pillars of development that underpin this mission: Swasthya (holistic healthcare), Shiksha (education), Sadak (roads and connectivity), Suraksha (security), Saksham (empowerment), Samman (dignity), Swachhata (cleanliness), and Sampark (engagement). Golay emphasized Sikkim’s accomplishment of attaining Front Runner status in the North Eastern Region District SDG Index, with all six districts showcasing balanced and inclusive progress, reflecting a steady economy with high per capita income.
Highlighting Sikkim’s strategic importance as a border state in the Eastern Himalayas, Golay reiterated the state’s role in contributing to India’s national security and integration. He underscored ongoing efforts to sustain momentum in achieving overall prosperity and well-being. The Chief Minister noted significant advancements in the healthcare sector, particularly with the establishment of a robust multi-tier healthcare network, including various health institutions, with the New Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital serving as the premier tertiary center offering specialized services.
A major breakthrough under the Swasthya pillar has been the establishment of the first Tertiary Cancer Care Centre in Sikkim. Additionally, efforts to expand dialysis facilities across the state aim to reinforce lifesaving services for chronic kidney disease. The healthcare infrastructure is being bolstered with new hospitals at different stages of completion throughout the state, ensuring that all regions have access to essential health services.
The Chief Minister revealed plans for a State Medical College at Sochakgang, aimed at cultivating future healthcare professionals. He also outlined initiatives to combat the rising cancer incidence through partnerships with national institutions, enhancing cancer prevention efforts and awareness across Sikkim. To mitigate cervical cancer, the government will provide free HPV vaccinations to 14-year-old girls and implement self-testing kits for women aged 30 to 65.
Shiksha, or education, remains another priority with an impressive literacy rate of 90.8 percent and a teacher-student ratio of 1:9 ensuring individualized guidance for every child. Sikkim has pioneered a kindergarten system in all government schools and is actively training educators in Early Childhood Care and Education. The state’s National Education Policy 2020 is being progressively executed to enhance learning quality and equity.
Moreover, the Chief Minister’s Mentorship Programme aims to support students in board examinations, contributing to a significant increase in CBSE pass rates. Higher education continues to thrive with plans for more government colleges, including reserved seats for local students at prestigious institutions.
The roads sector is also a focal point, with ongoing investments in infrastructure to connect remote areas more effectively. Over 5,000 kilometers of roads have been developed, reducing isolation and improving access throughout the state.
On the empowerment front, the Sikkim government aims to transform job seekers into job creators through the One Family One Entrepreneur Scheme, enhancing financial and institutional support for first-time entrepreneurs in key industries.
The Chief Minister further illustrated the state’s commitment to ensuring safety through expanded CCTV coverage and zero tolerance towards threats against women and children, enhancing security measures statewide.
Finally, Golay highlighted the ‘Sampark’ initiative, aimed at fostering direct communication between the government and citizens. The ‘Connect to CM’ platform allows residents to voice concerns, ensuring that governance is responsive and engaged.
In celebrating the 77th Republic Day, the Chief Minister extended his greetings to Sikkim’s citizens and fellow Indians, honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters and emphasizing the importance of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity foundational to India’s democratic spirit.
