Supreme Court Revokes Bail of Alleged Fake GST Kingpin: DGGI Takes Charge
The Supreme Court has annulled the bail granted to Shashi Kumar Choudhary, the alleged mastermind behind a significant fake GST invoice scheme, delivering a crucial legal victory for the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) in the Northeast Zone. Following this ruling, officials from DGGI Guwahati have successfully re-arrested Choudhary, intensifying their investigation into what is considered one of the largest GST fraud cases in the region.
Choudhary faces serious charges related to a vast fake invoicing operation tied to the betel nut trade, purportedly causing GST evasion amounting to hundreds of crores of rupees. Investigators assert that this fraud was executed by generating fake and dummy invoices without any real movement of goods. This scheme enabled illegal input tax credit claims and tax avoidance across multiple states.
Further reports indicate that Choudhary may have coordinated closely with Sushil Kumar Daga of Bikaner Assam Roadlines India Limited in Guwahati, who is believed to be the primary architect of this operation. While Choudhary managed the issuance of fake GST invoices, Daga allegedly controlled the commissions and profits stemming from these illicit activities.
The Supreme Court’s decision to revoke Choudhary’s bail is perceived as a strong affirmation of the enforcement agency’s case and a vital move toward dismantling organized tax evasion networks that operate across state lines.
Choudhary is expected to surrender to DGGI Guwahati on January 28 and will undergo comprehensive interrogation afterward. Officials anticipate that this questioning will uncover essential information regarding the mechanics of the racket, the businesses involved, financial trails, and the broader network underpinning the fraud.
