Unlocking the Secrets: Comparing Features, Speed, and Fares
India’s railway sector is stepping into a new era with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a state-of-the-art semi-high-speed sleeper train. Launched on January 17, 2026, this train aims to redefine overnight travel in India, drawing comparisons to the iconic Rajdhani Express, which has long been the standard for long-distance train journeys. The new train is expected to reach speeds of 120 to 130 km/h on most routes, with test runs achieving up to 180 km/h. In contrast, the Rajdhani can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h on select routes, but it generally operates at lower speeds elsewhere. Consequently, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to offer faster journey times than its Rajdhani counterparts.
Comfort is another significant differentiator. The coaches of the Vande Bharat Sleeper are designed for enhanced passenger experience, featuring better cushioning, easily accessible ladders, soft nighttime lighting, reading lamps, individual charging ports, and foldable snack tables. The train consists of 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and a First AC coach, accommodating over 800 passengers. In contrast, Rajdhani trains only offer three-tier sleeper coaches, and the interior of the Vande Bharat series is designed to provide a more modern travel experience.
Technologically, the Vande Bharat series operates on self-powered coaches with cabins at both ends, enhancing acceleration and deceleration times. This self-sufficient design allows for quicker travel and reduced turnaround times at terminal stations. The trains also include advanced features such as automatic doors and sealed gangways to maintain air conditioning in coaches, along with enhanced suspension systems to minimize discomfort from speed variations. The Rajdhani Express uses traditional locomotives, which can limit operational efficiency.
Regarding ticketing, the Vande Bharat Sleeper operates under stricter rules. Passengers will only be issued tickets for confirmed berths, with no waitlist or RAC options available. Tickets will also not be sold for journeys less than 400 kilometers. Though fares for the Vande Bharat Sleeper may be slightly higher than those on Rajdhani trains, the premium service intends to offer significant value for its passengers. The Rajdhani tickets are issued according to the standard IRCTC norms, allowing for waitlist and other fare concessions.
As the Vande Bharat Sleeper becomes available, questions arise about its impact on the Rajdhani Express. Some analysts speculate that the new service may eventually replace Rajdhani trains, while others envision it operating alongside them. Regardless of the outcome, the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper marks a significant shift in India’s sleeper train landscape, promising a new standard for overnight rail travel in the country.
