Mizoram Minister Advocates for Myanmar Refugees, Boosting Tourism Growth
Mizoram Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar confirmed on January 21 that the state is providing support to individuals from Myanmar who have sought refuge in Mizoram. He emphasized that this matter does not fall under his direct ministerial responsibilities. “There are people from Myanmar taking shelter in Mizoram. The refugees are well cared for,” Hmar stated, adding that he would refrain from further comments as it was outside his purview. He reassured that, to his knowledge, the refugees are healthy and adequately supported by the state.
During an event, Hmar also underscored the government’s focus on tourism as a key economic initiative. He announced plans to establish a new tourism hub in Thainzal, which is situated approximately three hours from Aizawl. “The Mizoram government is planning to develop a new tourism sector, especially in Thainzal,” he told ANI, highlighting the area’s natural beauty and recreational facilities, including a waterfall, a golf course, and a scenic valley that have the potential to become major attractions.
The region is experiencing a significant surge in tourism interest, with a 145.54 percent increase in tourist arrivals reported between 2023 and 2024. Preliminary data suggests that numbers could rise even further this year. Officials are optimistic that new rail connectivity will further enhance visitor inflow. “This is not just about increasing tourist numbers-it is about reshaping Mizoram’s economic future through tourism,” Hmar remarked. “Connectivity has opened the door; now we are walking through it with purpose.”
To encourage longer stays, Mizoram Tourism has launched the Mizoram Tourism Events & Festival Calendar 2026 on December 15, 2025. This calendar encompasses various festivals, cultural programs, and sporting events throughout the year, allowing travelers to plan their visits in advance and engage more meaningfully with the state.
