Mudgway’s journey began on a Palmerston farm, raised in a sporting family where he chose cycling over other pursuits. He experienced a profound loss in 2022 with the passing of his grandfather, who had been his staunchest supporter. His achievements, including a junior world track medal, led him to the professional coaching setup at Black Spokes, highlighting his ability to recognize the importance of teamwork.
Now at Li Ning, Mudgway remains focused on supporting the collective goal of securing the yellow jersey. His 11-year career has been fraught with challenges, from health issues like appendicitis in Belgium to significant accidents. One particularly severe incident last year resulted in a fractured arm due to a mechanical failure while he was at high speed, forcing an abrupt end to his season.
Mudgway’s recent wins in Pune, where he clinched both the green and yellow jerseys, mark a significant comeback. He intends to set up his sprinting teammates for success over the next couple of days. At a wedding in December, he donned the same tux as his best men and expressed admiration for cricketer Trent Boult-a testament to his team-oriented mentality.
Back home, affectionately nicknamed “Tank,” Mudgway has captured the hearts of local fans in Pune, who chant his name as his face appears in the media. In an unexpected turn, he managed to fend off strong competition from the Burgos team, proving his mettle by edging out Australian rider Allan Carter Bettles.
