Army Steps in to Restore Peace in Assam’s Kokrajhar After Violent Clashes
The Army has been deployed in sensitive areas of Kokrajhar district following violent clashes that resulted in two deaths on January 21, as authorities work to prevent further unrest. According to officials, Army units conducted joint night patrols with local administration in Karigaon and nearby regions on Tuesday. A flag march is planned for Wednesday to bolster community confidence, with four Army columns currently stationed in the district.
Authorities reported that the situation is under control, with increased security measures also implemented in the neighboring Chirang district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated that the Army’s deployment was anticipated, while the Rapid Action Force has been activated in response to the violence.
The unrest began late Monday when a vehicle carrying three members of the Bodo community allegedly struck two Adivasi individuals on Mansingh Road near a police outpost. Local villagers reportedly attacked the vehicle, leading to its destruction. One victim died at the scene, and another succumbed to injuries the following day, while three others remain in the hospital.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday, as individuals from both communities blocked the national highway near the Karigaon outpost. Protesters burned tires, set fire to a government office, and assaulted the local police station. Law enforcement responded with baton charges and tear gas, resulting in several injuries, including among police personnel.
In response to the escalating tensions, the district administration established relief camps at Karigaon High School and Gwajanpuri Amanpara High School, as residents fled their homes due to safety concerns. Prohibitory orders have been enforced across Kokrajhar under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
To prevent the dissemination of misinformation and maintain public order, mobile internet and data services have been suspended in both Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.
