Allegations of Serious Irregularities in MGNREGA Works in Kaliabor: What You Need to Know
Allegations of widespread corruption and procedural violations have emerged regarding the implementation of rural development initiatives by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in Kaliabor, Assam. These claims raise significant concerns about the transparency and accountability of key welfare programs. The controversy focuses on projects carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at the Uttar-Puwathoriya Gaon Panchayat, located within the Kaliabor Development Block.
Reports indicate that serious irregularities were found in an earth-filling project conducted at a village grazing ground (Gramthan) in the Hospital Line area of the Kaliabor Tea Garden in Silghat. This project, approved under the MGNREGA scheme for the 2024–25 financial year, was allocated a budget of ₹797,429.
Local sources and complainants have accused the responsible parties of delivering work that is significantly below standard, failing to justify the funds disbursed. They allege that a considerable fraction of the sanctioned budget has been misappropriated, with the earth-filling executed in violation of established technical norms and MGNREGA guidelines.
These allegations have raised alarm among local residents, who assert that such financial misconduct undermines the core mission of MGNREGA, which is to create sustainable community assets and provide livelihood security for rural families. The suspected misuse of public funds has led to increased calls for an independent investigation and accountability for those involved.
Community members are urging the Panchayat and Rural Development Department to perform a comprehensive audit of the project, reinforcing the need for ethical governance to protect public finances and restore trust in welfare initiatives.
