Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Tuirini small hydropower project, a 24-megawatt facility located in Aizawl district. The project, estimated to cost Rs 676.98 crore, aims to enhance the state’s energy self-sufficiency. “The project, funded by the New Development Bank, will bolster Mizoram’s energy self-reliance and sustainable power generation,” CM Lalduhoma shared in a post on X.

This initiative will be executed as an Externally Aided Project, with 80 percent of the funding provided by the central government and the remaining 20 percent coming from the Mizoram government. Speaking at the event, Lalduhoma termed the foundation-laying ceremony a significant milestone for the state and an integral part of his administration’s commitment to achieving energy independence.

The Chief Minister highlighted Mizoram’s advancements in the renewable energy sector, pointing out that a 10 MW solar power plant was inaugurated in Thenzawl, Serchhip district, in December last year. He also announced that the state government is currently constructing a 5 MW solar power plant in Sumsuih, Aizawl district.

To further diminish Mizoram’s reliance on external power sources, Lalduhoma indicated that two additional power projects are in progress. Notably, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a 132 MW hydroelectric project in Saitual district, near the Manipur border, has been completed. He added that the DPR for the proposed Tlawng hydropower project near Aizawl is expected to be finalized by September.

To augment solar power generation, an Expression of Interest (EOI) has been floated to private developers for setting up solar plants at five locations in the state. The Chief Minister also reported that 791 rooftop solar installations have been completed, contributing a combined capacity of approximately 2.62 MW, demonstrating the government’s commitment to renewable energy development.
