The Manipur Police have filed a first information report (FIR) against L Susindro Meitei, a legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), concerning the alleged demolition of a school building under construction in Imphal East district. The FIR was registered at the Porompat police station after a complaint by Konsam Santosh Meitei, a local resident and site supervisor for ATW (India) Pvt Ltd. The complaint specifically refers to the destruction of a newly approved building at Khurai Heikrumakhong Junior High School.
According to the FIR, the demolition incident occurred around 2 PM on January 18, when the school structure was reportedly taken down using an excavator. The complainant claims that the demolition was conducted on the orders and with the direct involvement of the sitting BJP MLA. The FIR also mentioned that Meitei has publicly stated through local media and social platforms that he authorized the demolition, which bolsters the allegations made in the complaint.
Santosh stated that the construction was funded by the North Eastern Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), a program of the North Eastern Council (NEC), and was being carried out by the Education Engineering Wing of the Government of Manipur. He asserted that the site had been officially allotted and that construction commenced after appropriate site verification and approval of the plans by the engineering wing.
The FIR indicated that the selection of the site and execution of the construction began recently based on these verified and approved drawings. The complainant additionally alleged that the MLA had previously warned him to halt construction due to claims that the site was unsuitable, threatening that the structure would face demolition if work continued.
In response to the complaint, police have initiated a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act of 1984. Efforts to contact L Susindro Meitei for a statement were unsuccessful. However, a source close to the legislator informed that Meitei is currently in the national capital. Police officials indicated that an investigation is ongoing and all relevant aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined.
