Delhi Breathes Easy: Hope on the Horizon as Rain Promises Relief from Pollution!

Delhi’s air quality registered a slight improvement on Tuesday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dipping into the ‘very poor’ category after two consecutive days of ‘severe’ pollution levels. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicated that the AQI stood at 395 at 8:00 AM. Out of 38 monitoring stations in the region, 23 reported ‘severe’ AQI conditions, with NSIT Dwarka leading the way with the best measurement of 300 recorded on January 20.

In terms of the weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted partly cloudy skies for Delhi, accompanied by shallow to moderate fog during the morning hours. The forecast predicts maximum temperatures between 23°C and 25°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 7°C and 9°C. The minimum temperature is considered normal for this time of year, but the maximum is projected to be 1.6 to 3.0 degrees Celsius above average.

The IMD is also monitoring three active Western Disturbances expected to bring moisture to the Western Himalayan region. This could lead to light to moderate rainfall from January 22 to 25 over parts of northwest India. Thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h, could occur from January 22 to 24, with rain expected in Delhi on January 23.

Visuals from areas such as ITO and the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Pandav Nagar show a persistent layer of smog affecting visibility. This comes after a notable rise in temperature was recorded on Monday, which saw a minimum of 7.7 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station. The weather office predicts little change in minimum temperatures across northwest India over the next two days, with a gradual rise in daytime temperatures anticipated.

For adjacent states-including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar-the IMD has issued warnings for dense to very dense fog conditions over the next couple of days, alongside a yellow and orange alert valid until 10:46 AM on Tuesday.

In response to the worsening air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reinstated Stage-IV measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). These measures, aimed at curbing air pollution, reflect the urgent need for effective strategies to combat persistent air quality issues that affect the health and well-being of residents.

As the city navigates both weather fluctuations and air quality challenges, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The combination of improving weather and ongoing pollution control measures offers a glimmer of hope in the continuing struggle against air pollution in one of the world’s most densely populated urban areas.
