A tragic train collision in southern Spain’s Andalusia region has resulted in at least 21 fatalities, with more than 100 injured. The incident has prompted expressions of grief nationwide, including from Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening when a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed in the Adamuz area of Andalusia. According to Spain’s rail network operator ADIF, the train moved off its designated tracks and entered the opposing track, colliding head-on with another train traveling in the opposite direction. Both trains derailed as a result of this catastrophic event.
Authorities have confirmed there are currently 21 confirmed deaths. Antonio Sánchez, the head of Andalusia’s emergency services, stated in a press conference that at least 100 people have sustained injuries. He cautioned that the death toll may rise, stating, “We face a very complex night.”
Transport Minister Óscar Puente noted that rescuers have transported at least 30 individuals in critical condition to hospitals. All injured passengers are being rescued and treated. The incident happened near a newly renovated part of the rail line, leading to questions about how such an accident could occur.
The train company Renfe reported that there were approximately 300 passengers aboard the Malaga-Madrid service. Rescuers faced challenges freeing those trapped in overturned cars and twisted metal. Francisco Carmona, head of the regional fire department in Córdoba, mentioned that the carriages had become so twisted that it was incredibly difficult to extract the victims. “To save some, we had to remove the bodies,” he remarked.
Some carriages fell as much as four meters off the track, while others were completely overturned. A passenger on the second train recounted the moment of collision, describing it as sudden chaos, plunging into darkness. Children were crying, and the scene was filled with blood and fear.
In response to the tragedy, high-speed services between Madrid and Córdoba, Seville, Malaga, and Huelva have been suspended. Local authorities have opened support centers for the families of the deceased and injured. The Ministry of Defense has confirmed that emergency military units have also been dispatched to assist in the rescue efforts.
Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have also sent condolences.
Despite having one of the largest high-speed rail networks in Europe, this crash brings back memories of the 2013 Santiago de Compostela train disaster, which claimed 80 lives. Unfortunately, this tragedy has reopened those painful recollections.
