Meghalaya Empowers Youth: New Community Skill Learning Approved for SSLC
The Meghalaya government has approved the introduction of a Community-Integrated Skill Learning (CISL) program for students in Classes 6 to 10, alongside allowing private candidates to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced this decision following a cabinet meeting held on January 16.
Sangma explained that the CISL program will be integrated into the existing Health and Physical Education curriculum, aiming to shift education from a purely theoretical framework to a more experiential approach. Students will be encouraged to acquire practical skills from their families and communities, which will be assessed as part of their academic evaluations. The initiative prompts students to choose skills based on their interests and backgrounds, making learning more relevant.
“If a parent is engaged in farming, the child can learn agricultural skills from the parent. Similarly, traditional skills available in the community can also be explored. The student will actively learn, practice, and demonstrate these skills,” the Chief Minister stated. He emphasized that while the program aims to develop valuable life skills and preserve traditional vocations, it will not force students to adopt their parents’ careers but will foster an appreciation for local livelihoods.
In addition to the CISL program, the cabinet approved provisions for the admission and registration of private candidates for the SSLC examination under the Meghalaya Board of School Education. Sangma noted this initiative would benefit those who previously did not pass the matriculation examination or who had to drop out after Class 8 due to various circumstances. “We are streamlining the process to make it easier for anyone who wants to complete Class 10 to do so,” he said, underlining the government’s commitment to enhancing access to secondary education.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the announcement of the Meghalaya Day Awardees for 2026. Celebrated poet and writer Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih was chosen for the U Tirot Sing Award in Arts and Literature, while Father Benoy Joseph received the Pa Togan Sangma Award for Social Services, and Riiohlang Dhar was honored with the U Kiang Nangbah Award for Sports and Games.
Moreover, the cabinet approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Border Areas Development Service Rules for 2025 and sanctioned the extension of several senior officials and advisers, including Kynphambor Wahlang as Superintending Engineer in the Directorate of Urban Affairs, Robert Lyngdoh as Officer on Special Duty in the Planning Department, and Bruce P. Marak as Advisor to the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project.
The cabinet also finalized the Republic Day speech for 2026 and nominated VIPs to take the salute during the parade, with preparations for the Republic Day celebrations already in progress.
