A significant confusion has emerged regarding the Election Commission’s special voter list correction campaign in the Pachhu Nagar Panchayat of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. The recently published draft voter list reveals that numerous names have been included at family addresses where those individuals have never resided. Officially, this was termed a large cleanup initiative; however, the reality presents a starkly different picture. This situation has incited intense anger and surprise among the local residents.
Chabeer Malik, a resident of Malviya Nagar, was astonished to find the names of 14 unknown voters listed at his address. Even more perplexing was the inclusion of his nephew Imran’s name, who actually lives several kilometers away in Aligarh’s Nai Basti. Imran has no idea who the other 13 individuals are or how they came to be listed as residents of his uncle’s home. Similar issues have been observed in several other houses on the same street. Number 14 has only one resident, yet the list contains numerous names. At Idris’s home, 10 Hindu voters’ names have appeared, who actually belong to another area. Likewise, Mahmood’s residence has seen an additional 12 names included inexplicably.
The local administration’s role has come under suspicion as well. Devendra, the booth-level officer, has assured that these errors will be corrected within a couple of days. Meanwhile, District Magistrate Arun Varma described the incident as a common error during a special correction process. He assured that these mistakes could be rectified using Form-8 and claimed there was no fundamental flaw in the entire process. However, when questioned on how so much incorrect information was uploaded to the official list, he explained that there wasn’t enough space to write house numbers on the forms, and many details had been pre-printed.
This bizarre situation has now taken a political turn. Sagir Ahmed, a leader of the Samajwadi Party and president of the Pachhu Nagar Panchayat, released a video alleging that the names of voters from the Balmiki community had been intentionally inserted into the addresses of Muslim families in his area. He pointed out that 5 to 6 unknown names are included at his own residence and found 56 fraudulent names across approximately a dozen houses nearby. He claims that there are no Balmiki families within 200 meters of the area, suggesting this could be part of a deeper conspiracy.
Although officials from the land records department have visited the area to identify suspicious names, Ahmad highlights that no action has been taken against any government official despite this significant oversight. This issue isn’t confined to Bulandshahr; it has sparked controversies across various regions of the country over the past year regarding the voter list correction process. What was intended to be a cleanup of the voter registry has now become the focal point of administrative negligence and political mistrust. This incident raises major questions regarding the security and transparency of electoral documents.
