German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the historic Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on Monday as part of his first trip to India. He praised Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, noting that Gandhi’s legacy has united Indians and Germans through the bonds of friendship. Merz emphasized that the need for Gandhi’s philosophy has significantly increased in today’s world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed Chancellor Merz at the ashram, and the two leaders paid their respects by laying floral tributes at the statue of the Father of the Nation. Following this tribute, they explored the Heart Kunj, a section of the ashram where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife, Kasturba, resided during the struggle for independence. During his visit, Merz expressed keen interest in observing how traditional methods of spinning khadi yarn are employed, reminding attendees of Gandhi’s promotion of self-reliance through khadi during India’s freedom movement. Outside the ashram, Merz penned an emotional note, stating that Gandhi’s belief in individual freedom and dignity remains an inspiration for the entire world.
After concluding their activities at the ashram, both leaders headed to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where Prime Minister Modi officially inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026. Following the ceremony, the two leaders enjoyed the festive atmosphere by riding in an open vehicle and experiencing the joy of flying kites. They engaged in discussions with women kite makers at the festival, gaining insight into the skilled processes involved in creating kites. Merz displayed enthusiasm about India’s rich cultural heritage.
According to the Gujarat government, this year’s International Kite Festival features 135 kite flyers from 50 countries, along with nearly a thousand kite enthusiasts from India. Over the past two days, various events have taken place in locations like Rajkot, Surat, and Dhola. The festival in Ahmedabad will continue until January 14, coinciding with Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan. Last year, around 400,000 visitors attended the festival.
Through this International Kite Festival, the Gujarat tourism department aims to showcase the state’s cultural heritage and tourism attractions to a global audience, particularly attracting domestic and international tourists to sites like Dhola and the Statue of Unity. Government sources indicate that over 500,000 tourists are expected to visit Gujarat for this year’s festival. Merz’s visit has added a new dimension to the diplomatic relations and cultural exchange between India and Germany.
