Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art slaughterhouse on Thursday, part of the ambitious Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative. Situated at Aadu Thotti on the Saidapet–Alandur Road, the facility represents a significant investment of ₹20.19 crore aimed at modernizing local infrastructure in response to the city’s growing demands.

Originally established in the 1960s, this slaughterhouse for goats underwent a major upgrade in 2006 when Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, then serving as Deputy Chief Minister, facilitated a modernization effort costing ₹9 crore. This renovation not only enhanced its operational efficiency but also earned it ISO certification. Given the rising population and trade expansion in Chennai, the latest upgrade is a crucial step in scaling up meat processing capabilities.

The new facility will feature the capacity to process up to 700 goats simultaneously, ensuring a robust supply chain. In addition to processing plants, it will incorporate cold storage facilities to preserve meat quality and increase shelf life. The layout also includes 16 retail shops and designated spaces for meat distribution, catering to both wholesalers and local consumers.

The government is particularly focused on integrating sustainable practices within this industrial operation. An integral component of the slaughterhouse’s design is a 7 KLD Effluent Treatment Plant to manage wastewater effectively. Furthermore, a high-capacity water tank, with a storage capacity of 7,000 litres, will support the facility’s operational needs.

Economic benefits extend beyond meat processing, as skins and other by-products generated at the facility will be channeled to relevant industries, creating additional revenue streams. The Minister emphasized the importance of these practices, noting that the modern slaughterhouse will also include a veterinary laboratory and dedicated space for veterinary professionals, ensuring animal health and welfare standards are upheld.

In a statement to reporters, Subramanian highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing cutting-edge environmental management practices, ensuring the slaughterhouse aligns with contemporary ecological standards. This modern facility not only aims to enhance meat processing but also serves as a model for future endeavors focused on sustainability and public health.

With this development, Chennai takes a significant step towards modernizing its meat processing capabilities while addressing environmental concerns and public health challenges. As the city continues to grow, such initiatives will play an essential role in supporting both its burgeoning population and its economic landscape.
