US President Donald Trump has proposed an increase in the military budget for 2027 to $1.5 trillion, up from the current $1 trillion. He argues that this larger allocation is essential for developing what he terms a “Dream Military,” a force capable of deterring any adversaries and ensuring national safety. The announcement came via a post on Truth Social, following consultations with lawmakers and senior government officials. Trump emphasized that the enhanced budget would bolster national security during a period he described as “very troubled and dangerous.”
In his statement, Trump noted, “After long and difficult negotiations with Senators, Congressmen, Secretaries, and other Political Representatives, I have determined that, for the good of our country, especially in these very troubled and dangerous times, our Military Budget for the year 2027 should not be $1 Trillion Dollars, but rather $1.5 Trillion Dollars.” This increase, according to Trump, would enable the U.S. to construct a military force that is “SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe.”
Additionally, Trump linked the proposed budget increase to revenues generated from tariffs, claiming these had created the financial leeway necessary for elevated defense spending. He stated, “If it weren’t for the tremendous numbers being produced by tariffs from other countries, many of which, in the past, have ‘ripped off’ the United States at levels never seen before, I would stay at the $1 Trillion Dollar number.”
He asserted that increased tariff revenue now allows for a larger military budget while also reducing the national debt and delivering financial advantages to American citizens. Trump contrasted the current situation with that of the previous administration, asserting that the levels of revenue being generated were previously “unthinkable.”
