Unlock Energy Savings: How Smart Home Materials Combat Extreme Heat

Australia is experiencing increasingly severe heat due to climate change, leading to more frequent and prolonged heatwaves. Unfortunately, many homes, particularly older ones, were not built to withstand such harsh conditions. During these extreme weather events, large areas of the Australian interior can see temperatures exceed 40°C. This not only creates discomfort but also poses serious health risks to residents. Heatwaves have resulted in more fatalities in Australia than all other natural disasters combined. In response to this growing crisis, smart materials are being utilized in construction to help homes better manage temperature fluctuations.

While most people might default to turning on the air conditioner during a heatwave, this solution has significant downsides. The increasing dependency on air conditioning contributes to a dangerous cycle: rising temperatures lead to greater energy consumption, which in turn raises carbon dioxide emissions, particularly when solar power is not an option. Buildings account for about 40% of global energy use and nearly one-third of carbon emissions. In Australia, as much as 50% of household energy can go toward heating and cooling, especially during extreme heat periods. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, it’s crucial to rethink how homes deal with heat, making smart materials vital in creating homes that respond dynamically to their environment.

Imagine a material that effortlessly absorbs excess heat during the day and releases it back into the home at night, working silently without needing electricity or switches. This is the essence of phase change materials, a type of smart material. Comprising substances like waxes and oils, these materials can be found in various forms, such as thin panels or microcapsules. They act like thermal batteries embedded in roofing or walls, storing heat as they transition from solid to liquid and releasing it again as they solidify. In summer, they help keep indoor spaces cooler by absorbing heat throughout the day and releasing it when the temperature drops at night. Conversely, in winter, they aid in retaining warmth. Research shows that phase change materials can considerably reduce average energy usage by around 37% across Australian cities. However, their effectiveness diminishes during extreme heat; if nighttime temperatures remain elevated for too long, the materials may not solidify, rendering them temporarily ineffective.

Reflective coatings offer another approach to combatting heat. These coatings can lower indoor temperatures by up to 4°C when applied to rooftops, decreasing reliance on air conditioning and reducing energy bills. However, their efficacy can shift with the seasons; while they are beneficial in summer, they can prevent warmth absorption in winter, making homes colder during those months. Therefore, to construct homes suitable for a warming planet, it is essential to develop smart materials that adapt to temperature changes, blocking heat when it’s hot and retaining it during cooler periods.

The future of home construction lies in adaptive strategies. Picture a roofing system that not only deflects intense summer heat but also incorporates phase change materials to manage indoor temperatures year-round. A recent study led by Md Jaynul Abden demonstrated that combining reflective coatings with phase change materials significantly enhances home efficiency during simulated heatwaves. Results revealed indoor temperatures dropped by 7.9 to 9.7 °C, while energy savings soared to 80.6%. Notably, these improvements offer substantial comfort enhancements during heatwaves, particularly for communities lacking air conditioning. By striking a balance between heat reflection and absorption, we can optimize these materials’ performance. Although these solutions are not yet widespread, they are likely to become standard in new construction and renovations as heatwaves become more severe and the demand for energy-efficient solutions escalates in the coming decade.
