Two Arrested in Manipur for Abducting Minors with Prepak Ties
Two women affiliated with a banned group were apprehended in Thoubal district, Manipur, on allegations of abducting three minors with the intent to recruit them into their organization, according to police reports on Wednesday. The women, identified as members of the outlawed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), were arrested in the Khangabok area on Monday. This action followed an investigation into the reported abduction of the three children from Kakching Khunou Ngaikhong Leikai in Kakching district the previous Sunday.
A police officer stated, “The children have been rescued from Uchiwa Awang Leikai in Imphal West district and handed over to their parents.” The authorities also recovered a vehicle allegedly used in the kidnapping. Investigations are ongoing, with police actively working to identify and apprehend additional accomplices involved in this incident.
These arrests come amid heightened search operations across Manipur, spurred by escalating ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. The unrest, primarily between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, has resulted in over 260 fatalities and displaced thousands of residents. In response to the crisis, the central government imposed President’s Rule in the state following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The Manipur Assembly, which is structured to last until 2027, has remained under suspended animation since the political upheaval.
