DRDO’s New 1500 km SRBM: A Game Changer for National Defense

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has received the green light to begin developing a new missile named BM-04. This short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) has been granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), signifying swift commencement of its development and imminent testing. The BM-04 missile is poised to fill a notable void in India’s existing defense arsenal. Currently, the short-range Pinaka rockets can target distances of approximately 40 to 90 kilometers, while the long-range Agni missiles exceed 2,000 kilometers. The BM-04 will bridge this gap, boasting a range of 400 to 1,500 kilometers.

This missile is designed to strike critical targets deep within enemy territory, such as command centers, airfields, and logistical hubs. Importantly, it aims to provide a robust military response without the necessity for a nuclear option. The BM-04 weighs around 11,500 kilograms and measures approximately 10.2 meters in length, with a diameter of 1.2 meters. It carries a warhead of 500 kilograms of conventional explosives and employs a two-stage solid fuel propulsion system for rapid and efficient launches.

Guided by a combination of inertial navigation, GPS, and India’s own IRNSS (NavIC), the missile is engineered for accuracy, achieving a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than 30 meters. Its design incorporates fixed wings and control fins, which enhance maneuverability during flight and help to evade enemy defenses. Moreover, the BM-04 will be launched from a canister-based system mounted on a road-mobile truck, enabling quick repositioning and improved survivability in the field.
