Manipur MP Accuses PM Modi and Amit Shah of Threatening State Unity
Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for exacerbating an ‘internal divide’ in the state. On January 6, he expressed concerns that the security measures implemented under President’s Rule are fostering a dangerous, artificial division. Akoijam questioned how an elected Member of Parliament could be barred from accessing an Indian village, deeming it a serious violation of democratic and constitutional principles.
During a visit to Saiton village in Bishnupur district, which recently experienced IED explosions injuring two civilians, Akoijam encountered obstacles from Central security forces. He was prevented from advancing further into what has been labeled an illegal buffer zone within the village. The MP voiced that this situation represents an unprecedented and unconstitutional restriction within Indian territory.
Standing at a checkpoint, Akoijam remarked that the buffer zone delineates a new internal boundary. “This is where the border of India begins-India with Kuki. I cannot go to this side because this has become an India–Kuki border,” he stated, highlighting the fragmentation of the Indian state within its own territory.
Furthermore, Akoijam pointed out that such restrictions on parliamentarians have not been observed in other riot-affected areas of the country, making the situation in Manipur both exceptional and alarming. He warned that maintaining these buffer zones could further diminish public trust, erode federal principles, and entrench divisions rather than foster peace.
