Iran’s Bloody Protests: At Least 35 Dead, Indian Citizens Warned in Delhi
Protests in Iran over deteriorating economic conditions have resulted in at least 35 fatalities, while around 1,200 individuals have been arrested. The country is grappling with persistent inflation, worsening its economic crisis. As a consequence, demonstrations have erupted nationwide over the past week, intensifying the volatile situation in Iran.
Reports indicate that of the deceased, 29 were demonstrators, four were children, and two were members of Iran’s security forces. Additionally, a local news source has reported that approximately 250 police officers and 45 members of the Basij paramilitary forces sustained injuries during the protests.
In light of these developments, New Delhi issued a warning to Indian citizens in Iran on Monday. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs advised, “Do not travel to Iran unless absolutely necessary.” Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin have been specifically urged to avoid areas of protest or armed conflict.
Protests are ongoing in 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, with some regions tallying more than ten deaths. The primary catalyst for these protests is the sudden decline in the rial against the U.S. dollar, coupled with rising inflation rates.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a cautionary statement regarding Iran. On social media, he stated, “We are ready. We are monitoring the situation closely. If they start killing people, the U.S. will not remain silent.”
With the protest and security situation remaining tense, both the international community and local citizens are concerned. India is making efforts to ensure the safety of its nationals through this warning.
