National Students Demand Justice: Protests Erupt Over Anjel Chakma’s Death
Activists from the Indian National Students’ Union (NSUI) staged a foot march in Dehradun on January 3, calling for strict action following the killing of Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura, and raising serious concerns about student safety in Uttarakhand. The march commenced at the Dehradun Municipal Corporation and concluded at the District Magistrate’s office, where participants submitted a memorandum to the City Magistrate. The NSUI emphasized that the tragic incident has deeply unsettled the academic community, revealing significant shortcomings in law and order, and criticized delays in legal action against the accused.
This protest followed a candlelight march organized by the NSUI at Jantar Mantar on December 30, where NSUI President Varun Choudhary condemned the rising incidents of violence and lynching in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He accused the party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of creating an environment that enables such acts and expressed frustration over the lack of timely action, asserting that nearly two weeks passed without any significant response.
According to police authorities, progress has been made in the investigation. Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh announced that five suspects had been arrested by December 30, with efforts ongoing to locate a sixth individual who remains at large. Singh noted that this absconding suspect, reported to be of Nepali descent, fled the area shortly after the incident and might be hiding in border regions. A specialized team has been formed to track him down.
Singh also indicated that additional legal measures, including charges related to attempted murder, were implemented following initial findings. The inquiry has been handed over to a senior officer, and statements from Chakma’s family have been recorded. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been updated on the situation, and the case is under close monitoring at senior police and Director General of Police (DGP) levels.
Anjel Chakma, who was an MBA student, suffered a violent attack involving knives and blunt instruments in Dehradun on December 9. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in a hospital. Police revealed that the complaint regarding the attack was filed approximately 24 hours after the incident by the victim’s brother and friends, leading to the identification of the suspects and subsequent arrests.
