Empowering Women: Assam Government Delivers Cheques to 30,000 Entrepreneurs
In a significant move to enhance economic empowerment among women, the Assam government distributed entrepreneurship cheques to over 30,000 women on Friday under the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Scheme. The event took place in the Borsola constituency at Thelamara Higher Secondary School, attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, Sonitpur Lok Sabha MP Ranjit Dutta, local MLA Ganesh Kumar Limbu, senior legislators, and district officials.
During his address, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the Women Entrepreneurship Scheme transcends mere welfare, viewing it as a “symbol of dignity and respect” for women. He noted that no previous government had supported such a large number of women simultaneously and highlighted the scheme’s role in improving women’s social status within both families and society.
Sarma took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party, stating that prior administrations offered only symbolic aid, while his government has launched transformative programs such as Orunodoi and Nijut Moina, aimed at fostering financial independence. He revealed that 3.2 million women across Assam have benefitted from the entrepreneurship initiative. Additionally, the Chief Minister announced that beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme would receive a consolidated amount of Rs 8,000 in February, further bolstering support for economically vulnerable families.
Health Minister Ashok Singhal spoke about the extensive changes in Assam over the past five years, citing the end of frequent bandhs, the resolution of insurgency-related problems, and steady economic progress. He attributed these advancements to the Chief Minister’s leadership, which promotes inclusive development across various communities.
MP Ranjit Dutta discussed the synergy between Central and State welfare initiatives and their positive impacts at the grassroots level.
On the sidelines of the program, Chief Minister Sarma laid the foundation stone for upgrading the Tezpur Medical College Hospital to a super-specialty facility. He also inaugurated the Kharka Mini Stadium and laid the foundation for the Chandranath Sharma Memorial Government Model College at Bihaguri, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving healthcare, education, and sports infrastructure.
