Dashavatar Makes History: First Marathi Film Contending for Oscars!
Dashavatar, a Marathi-language film directed by Subodh Khanolkar, has made history by being included on the Academy Awards contention list, a first for Marathi cinema. The production team announced this groundbreaking achievement on January 4, confirming its eligibility in the main open competition category for the upcoming Oscars. Zee Studios, which supports the film, hailed this as a landmark moment for the industry on their social media platforms.
Khanolkar shared that he received official notification from the Academy about Dashavatar’s inclusion. He emphasized that this film is the only Marathi title among over 150 films selected from around the world and is also the first from the language to be screened in the Academy’s official viewing room.
Dashavatar is produced by Ocean Film Company, in collaboration with Zee Studios and Ocean Art House Production. The film features a stellar cast, including Dilip Prabhavalkar in the lead role, alongside Mahesh Manjrekar, Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Menon, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Vijay Kenkare, Ravi Kale, Abhinay Berde, Sunil Tawade, Aarti Wadagbalkar, and Lokesh Mittal.
Released in theaters on September 12, 2025, the film is now one step closer to the Oscars. According to the Academy’s schedule, voting for nominations will occur from January 12 to January 16, 2026, with nominees announced on January 22, 2026. The awards ceremony is set for March 15, 2026, in Los Angeles.
