Tripura’s Bold Move: January 2026 Declared “Zero Fatality Month” for Road Safety

January 3, 2026 2 Min Read

In a concerted effort to enhance road safety, the Tripura Transport Department has designated January 2026 as “Zero Fatality Month.” This initiative aligns with the directives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and aims to underscore that fatalities related to road accidents can be significantly reduced through coordinated, data-driven actions.

To facilitate this campaign, the central government has enlisted the support of the Save Life Foundation (SLF). This organization has a proven track record, having achieved reductions in road accident fatalities ranging from 30 to 60 percent in high-risk areas nationwide.

Throughout January, Tripura’s campaign will concentrate on three pivotal areas: identifying risks using data analysis, implementing safety measures, and establishing a framework for ongoing monitoring and review. Each district will pinpoint the three most hazardous road corridors, each spanning at least 5 kilometers, and will scrutinize factors such as the time of accidents, the demographics of high-risk road users, and the nature of the accidents themselves. Interventions will then be prioritized based on this baseline data.

Safety measures will prioritize speed regulation, improved road signage, dedicated pedestrian pathways, enhanced lighting, and the installation of dividers. Additional strategies will target the prevention of drunk driving, improper speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, and ensure compliance with seatbelt and helmet usage. The campaign will also look to provide adequate ambulance and trauma care facilities near known accident hotspots. Furthermore, awareness initiatives will be rolled out, engaging commercial drivers, transport operators, school students, and the broader public.

Monitoring will take place through weekly meetings of district-level task forces, which will consistently submit reports on progress. A state-level review meeting is scheduled for mid-January 2026, to be chaired by the Chief Secretary or another designated officer, involving various departments including Transport, Police, Health, and Education.

While the primary objective is to mitigate accidents during January 2026, the initiative is also envisioned to support longer-term goals. The Indian government is aiming to halve road accident fatalities by 2030 on a national scale. The Tripura Transport Department stresses the need for coordinated efforts and increased public awareness to create a safer road environment for everyone.
