Thwarted ISIS-Inspired New Year’s Eve Attack: 18-Year-Old Arrested in NC
On New Year’s Eve, the FBI announced that it had thwarted a potential ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in North Carolina, resulting in the arrest of 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant, who was suspected of planning the attack. This operation followed a months-long investigation, and authorities were able to apprehend Sturdivant before any harm could occur. According to reports from Al Jazeera, a grocery store and a fast-food restaurant in Mint Hill were identified as potential targets for his planned assault.
During a news conference, US Attorney Russ Ferguson emphasized the importance of the intervention, stating that “countless lives were saved here.” He highlighted that New Year’s Eve typically sees a rush of shoppers at grocery stores as families prepare for celebrations. Ferguson noted that without this intervention, there could have been a “significant loss of life.”
Sturdivant was taken into custody on the day of the intended attack and faced charges of “attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization” during his court appearance. Ferguson mentioned that Sturdivant could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. However, he expressed disappointment with the judicial system for not approving an earlier request to detain Sturdivant on mental health grounds.
In a statement, the FBI confirmed the thwarting of the attack, stating that the suspect had been “directly inspired to act by ISIS.” FBI Director Kash Patel praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement partners, affirming their role in saving lives.
