Tripura Proposes Eklavya Schools in All 58 Blocks to Elevate Tribal Education
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that the state government is planning to establish Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) in all 58 blocks of Tripura. This initiative aims to enhance access to quality education for tribal students. Speaking at an event in Agartala, Saha emphasized the government’s commitment to improving educational opportunities, especially for Scheduled Tribe children residing in rural and remote areas.
The EMRS scheme, which is supported by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, focuses on providing residential education for tribal students, empowering them to pursue higher education. Before the BJP came to power in 2018, Tripura only had four EMRSs. Since then, the central government has approved the establishment of 21 additional schools in the region, with 12 currently operational. Two more schools are expected to be functional by March 2026.
Saha highlighted the long-term vision of the state government, which is to ensure all 58 blocks are equipped with EMRSs, thus promoting equal access to high-quality education for all tribal students in Tripura. He recently appealed to the central government to reconsider the existing criteria for setting up EMRSs, which currently stipulate that a block must have at least a 50% tribal population and a minimum of 20,000 tribal residents to qualify.
“I have strongly requested relaxation of these criteria so that more EMRSs can be established in Tripura. I hope the Centre will take a positive decision,” Saha stated.
