IIT Guwahati’s Amrendra Kumar Das Appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Tezpur University
The Ministry of Education announced the appointment of Professor Amrendra Kumar Das from IIT Guwahati as the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, Assam, on December 31. This decision comes amid the formation of a high-level enquiry committee charged with investigating the ongoing crisis and various allegations regarding the university’s operations.
According to an official statement from the Department of Higher Education in the Government of India, Professor Das, who currently serves in the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati, will assume his role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor immediately. His appointment is in accordance with the regulations outlined in the Tezpur University Act, Statutes, and Ordinances and has received approval from the appropriate authorities.
On that same day, the Ministry issued an Office Memorandum to establish an enquiry committee under Section 9 of the Tezpur University Act of 1993. This committee will explore all issues related to the current circumstances at Tezpur University, including allegations against the Vice-Chancellor.
The three-member committee will be led by Professor Lokendra Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, with Professor Jagadish Kumar Patnaik from Nagaland University and Professor Manish R. Joshi, Secretary of the University Grants Commission, as additional members.
The memorandum instructs the Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University to withdraw from all official duties and take a leave of absence effective immediately, remaining on leave until the enquiry concludes.
The committee’s mandate includes a thorough investigation into the findings and recommendations of a previous Fact-Finding Committee report submitted to the Chancellor’s Office. It will examine the factors contributing to the current crisis, including resignations and changes in administration among various university officials. The committee has the authority to visit the campus, engage with stakeholders, review pertinent documents, and investigate any other relevant matters.
The enquiry committee is expected to submit its report as soon as possible, within three months from the issuance of the Office Memorandum. The University Grants Commission will provide secretarial support to the committee, while authorities at Tezpur University have been instructed to fully cooperate and provide all necessary documentation and assistance.
These developments reflect a direct intervention by the central government aimed at stabilizing the administration of Tezpur University and addressing concerns about its governance and operational effectiveness.
